Ebook About
The veteran tells his grandson about his World War 2 experiences, without pathos, but with gripping, brutal honesty. What awaits the reader:“Deeply shocked and heartbroken, we continued on our way back. I had had enough. Enough of the killing. Enough of the dying. In the eyes of the Alsatian I saw a question I was also asking myself. When would this terrible war come to an end, the cannons fall silent, the armories shut down? When would we finally be able to return to life instead of crawling, slaying, and destroying?”“He lived through the whole day and finally died the following night. During this time, he kept calling for help. Just before he died, he thought he saw his mother and calmed down a bit. I rested my hand on his shoulder. I did not want him to die alone. He finally left our world with his eyes wide open and his hands pressed over his intestines.”“My baptism of fire was the most incisive event of my life. Nothing was ever going to be the same. My youthful carefreeness had vanished under the impact of dread and orchestrated mass destruction.”SynopsisThe rulers’ mistakes are paid for with the blood of the people. This is shown in history both recent and ancient, time and time again. It was no different for an Austrian mountain farmer’s son who was thrown into the carnage of the Eastern Front. He was in the prime of his youth, and the German Reich was already close to losing the war.In ripe old age, he remembers those dark hours that have haunted him throughout his life. Manning his machine gun in merciless struggles with a superior enemy, or fighting for survival in brutal close combat, reduced to basest instincts. He also remembers the rock-solid comradeship with his mountain troop, the unexpected gestures of humanity, and an insane destructiveness at a time when the world was out of joint. This ruthless, honest, and touching real-life account of a simple WW2 frontline soldier serves as a reminder to stand up for peace at all times, and to despise war. Until the eyes shut …About the authorDr. Andreas Hartinger, born 1985 in Fuerstenfeld/Austria had a profound interest in contemporary history from a young age. During his professional assignments in various crises around the world, he has seen with his own eyes how war takes humanity hostage. He and his grandfather Hans Kahr, born 02.08.1925, wrote down the elder’s war memories together. It was painstaking work and it involved innumerable unsettling conversations. What started off as a family project has become an international book bestseller in various history and WW2 book categories. Mr. Kahr`s Wehrmacht identification tag was -600- St.Kp. II/E.u.A.G.J.E.R 138. His combat unit on the Eastern Front was 4. (s) Kompanie / Gebirgs-Jäger-Regiment 138 / 3. Gebirgsdivision. Readers with an interest in the subject or relatives/friends that were deployed on the Eastern Front, are encouraged to research Mr. Kahr`s story and the divisional history in the second half of the war. Book Until the Eyes Shut: Memories of a machine gunner on the Eastern Front, 1943-45 Review :

This is the story of WWII from a rare perspective: an Axis soldier on the Eastern Front. It goes to show that an Austrian soldier fighting with the Germans was a soldier, just like a soldier fighting with the Allies was. Hans Kahr grew up on a farm in East Styria, Austria. After a brief period in the Hitler Youth and some training, he was conscripted and sent to the Eastern Front in 1943. In a way, he only knows defeat: though he and his comrades win battles, it is clear throughout that they are only defending and usually retreating. Marching through Ukraine, the Hungarian Puszta, the Carpathian Mountains in Romania. Steppes and mountains, icy cold winters and brief, mild summers. It’s incredibly inspiring to see how a simple farm boy, eighteen years old, turns into an expert machine gunner, survives winter after winter in Russia and Ukraine, and even years doing slave work for the USSR after the final defeat. He has his upbringing to fall back on, an upbringing that focused on hard work but also human values. He lives through horrors with his comrades and makes bonds that are almost as strong as family ties. This bond can be created in just a few days of battle. That’s what you take away from this book: the assault on humanity that war is, the monstrosities you are forced to witness as a soldier, sometimes to commit. It is just as inspiring to see how soldiers manage to hold on to values and hope.I imagined Hans talking to his grandson in 2019, reliving the horrors just so he could share his invaluable lessons with the world. If you want to experience the Eastern Front from very, very close, and you want to see the war from the perspective of an Axis soldier: read this book. It is complete, real, and uncomfortably human.
I bought this book based on the positive reviews. It is very well written and interesting account of WWII small unit combat on the Eastern front. Unfortunately, I believe this is a fake story. I have been reading a wide range of military history for over 65 years, and there are too many things that do not appear to be consistent with other WWII narratives, in general, and grandfather (father)/grandson (son) edited accounts, in particular:1. There is no brief biography of the author, Andreas Hartinger. Who is he?2. There is no description of how the grandfather and grandson worked together to develop the book. Most books of this nature take great pride in describing how the parties worked together to generate an accurate and interesting narrative.3. There appear to be no third parties involved in the book’s development.4. The book is too well written to likely be the product of a simple farmer.5. There are no photos of grandfather and grandson together or the grandson. Just a small photo from 1950 that purports to show Hans and his father along with a boy and a woman. If this is a family photo why are we not told who everyone is?6. There are no maps to make it easy to follow the movement of the author.7. Why would someone refer to his closest friend in his unit and MG partner as “the Alsatian” throughout the book and not the more personable “Emil” (as he does when they are finally parting). This is charisma over reality.8. If you share a bedroom with two sisters, don’t you at least mention both their names. Even if you don’t share a bedroom, don’t you tell the reader who your siblings are. We only learn that one sister is named Johanna a few pages from the end of the text.9. Even though he states that his diary contained names of dear friends, there are scarcely any individuals mentioned who are given complete names (and origins) that could be checked for authenticity, e.g.: “…born on a hot summer day in 1925 in East Styria …”; “… my old school friend Toni, who lived nearby.” His immediate unit NCOs are referred to time and again simply as Oberjagers.10. The NCOs mostly appear to be big brother or father figures.11. Officers are depicted as lacking common sense.12. The term “Zulu-time” is based the NATO phonetic alphabet word for Z, “Zulu". I am not aware that the German army used this term in WWII. Moreover, why would the German army be coordinating an attack in Romania based on Greenwich Mean Time.13. Both the German army and Soviet army appear to use the same system of catching individuals engaged in a punishable offense but waiting until the next day to figure out who they are.14. How likely would it be that grabbing a passing Jager by the sleeve and pulling out of the line would provide an individual that knew “… what was the matter with Toni?”15. His sergeant dies a Hollywood death in the closing stages of the war. This is a man Hans states had saved them a dozen times from sure death, but he doesn’t even mention his name for posterity.16. He happens upon a field post office at the end of March and in all the chaos he is able to mail his diary and it makes it to his home. How likely?I hope that other readers with more knowledge of these combat actions, access to foreign military archives, or knowledge of Mr. Hartinger could shed some light on the veracity of this work.
